Letting people play with the homepages, eCards, and “funimations” all had played a large factor into what made it stand out and kept users on the website.

In 2015, hoops&yoyo stopped production after a series of mass lay offs at the company during the summer of that year. In these lay offs was the original series creator Bob Holt, who was told that hoops&yoyo did not fit into the “humor” that Hallmark wanted. During this time, a lot of other animation-focused projects were cut or ceased production, and the focus was no longer on eCards. All future hoops&yoyo merchandise was made reusing/editing renders or prints already produced, and was limited to print only cards.

Some of the eCards were converted into video format, and kept up on the site, until April 1st, 2021, when the Hallmark eCard website displayed the following message:

“”April 30, 2021 will be the last date of Hallmark eCards service. Starting May 1, 2021, you will no longer be able to access www.hallmarkecards.com, send eCards, receive eCards, or access your account. It has been a privilege to support you in strengthening your relationships through the use of eCards.”

Because Flash was phased out so early on, a large amount of the content that was on the Hallmark.com website was not properly archived. For a long while, the only way to experience the content of hoops&yoyo was to seek out the very few saved SWFs, spread across The Wayback Machine / FlashMuseum, as well as Alec Comes’ video, “Every single Hoops & Yoyo eCard that was on Hallmark’s website before they were taken down” which, as the title implies, was a compilation of every single hoops&yoyo video file the website had before the shutdown notice in 2021. Still, a lot of the animated content was missing, and the downloadable files, such as wallpapers, screensavers, etc.. were harder to access and had no cohesive place to view them all.

Meanwhile, around the same early years of 2021, founder and webmaster of piddles.net Cyan would slowly begin to download files relating to hoops&yoyo. Immediately she noticed its content was poorly documented or mostly lost to time. Soon it became her goal to archive the franchise, and host it’s content on a website. During this time, she was able to gather the initial batch of eCards from Flashpoint Flashfreeze which hosted a capture of all of the ecards from a public AWS bucket of Hallmark Australia. Days were spent picking through these, and Wayback Machine captures, to properly gather everything she needed for the project. In October 2022, the first drafts of piddles.net began to form.

In December 2022, The One Donut A Day Blog was opened by defconcitydotcom. This blog’s main goal was to try and archive what was still available online for hoops&yoyo, similar to Cyan. From late 2022 to mid-2024, this blog and associated YouTube Channel was the first major post mortem hub for fans of hoops&yoyo and those interested in its history. It helped to gather a small community of regular people, who were all interested in archiving the franchise’s work. During this time, however, there was no place for all of the files to be easily accessed by anyone, there was no major community hub to discuss finding specific material, and there were very few interested in the search.

Among these people, was Cyan, who in June 2024, finally unveiled piddles.net, which was a website archive of everything she had gathered from scraping the internet. It was built from the ground up all on her own, code, graphics, and putting in the plugins to get other site features working. Alongside it was the piddles.net Discord server, which in its early days was referred to as “the hoops&yoyo archive”. This was not the only hoops&yoyo Discord at the time; however, it was the most mature, structured, and focused one. It was built with the goal in mind of not only providing a space for people to discuss the series and socialize, but to gather information about hoops&yoyo and document it. This opened the floodgates for the first ever serious lost media searches started for this franchise on a team scale.

As a more cohesive catalog of items was created, and the hunt for specific items began, some files/animations/images became more sought after than others. This was due to a variety of reasons; some lost eCards like Favorite Foods do not leave themselves much to the imagination. Not only is the title not informative, but the thumbnail is generic…

and thus searching for a card like this was seen as less interesting compared to something like “I Really Moved!”, which gave an idea of what the card was like, and also had a more interesting thumbnail, with the duo across from each other in separate skyscrapers.

Every card was valued equally, but some card over time had gathered more attention then others because of the idea of “what could be on it”. However, one card gained this reputation more then any other eCard, “Listen Up, Troops!”

At first glance, this looks about as mundane or simple as the majority of the other eCards, it’s really just the duo standing in a white, slightly blue gradient void holding American flags. However, while digging for information on this specific card, 1234Studios’ old forum post from 2022 resurfaced. In this forum post, he writes:

“Lost Hoops & Yoyo thing that is one of Yoyo’s earliest appearances (if not the first)

This is something I found on an archived page of the Hoops & Yoyo site called “listen up, troops!”. Not only that, but it featured a design of yoyo only seen in the initial batch of eCards. Because there was no recording of it, however, people could only wonder what was on it.

September 2024, Candylani, one of the first to join the piddles.net Discord, published her own hoops&yoyo fansite. This website had something that no other place had at the time, a page that recounted her memories of eCards that the community did not have access to. Among these were the aforementioned “I Really Moved!” , “More Summer Fun” , “Things We’re Thankful For” and, most importantly of all, her memories of Listen Up Troops. This was the first major lead we had as to what was on the contents of this card, and it was the final straw to skyrocket it into infamy.

“. . . The clickable icons were US flags that wiggled when the mouse cursor hovered over it. If I remember correctly, there were 4 flags in total, not including the “Jump to Message” flag.* Clicking on each flag has Hoops & Yoyo place their flags in the ground and read various letters. . .”

While some of the exact details were not 100%, this was the most information we had on the card, and a lot of missing eCards had no other information other then a name and thumbnail. Because of this, an unintended side effect occurred: several people attempted to animate Listen Up Troops based on the recounting of Candylani. I’m debating on sharing some of them here, because they are important to what made Listen Up, Troops so infamous. They would appear in the feeds of a lot of people who were seeing hoops&yoyo in their YouTube algorithm and spread it further. However, a large majority of them were created by very young children, or used synthesized voices to replicate the voices of hoops&yoyo. While they did spread the word and name of Listen Up, Troops, this was a trend, and only so few were made in such a span of time.

From 2024 to Late 2025, the search for content was on a steady pace. A lot of significant things were found during this era, and it would be redundant to recount them all, but there was a common theme among 99% of the material being found: none of of it was Flash. Some Flash/interactive files were found during this time, but physical cards and international merchandise became the most commonly found type of media. Focus began to shift in the overall community as the physical card collectors became the vocal minority of researchers.

This, however, never stopped them from remembering Listen Up, Troops. Despite the drought in Flash content, the inconsistent rate of things being found, and overall turmoil within the community and people generally losing interest, this eCard was seen as the “holy grail” of items. In a way, it became a symbol of encouragement for the community, a reminder of what the goal is. For many, the content of the card was not important, rather, the idea that it could be found leading to much more being found. I find it funny that a eCard about the military created an army of its own, with the goal of spreading its name, and finding it. Over the following months, several false leads came up. Because this was the most widely known bit of lost media from the franchise, most people tried to look for it first. This just created a feedback loop where one person would see that another person is looking for Listen Up Troops, and follow suit, rinse and repeat.

A lot of hope in archiving Hallmark’s Flash content was dying at this point, and for a bit, the server focus shifted to another Hallmark property, Asteroid Andy.

“Asteroid Andy was a passion project created by Pedro Martín under Hallmark Cards. It followed the story of a little boy from the future, Andy, who lives right beside “the greatest school in the galaxy”. Starting as a simple pattern for license, Andy soon grew into its own series of shorts, games, and its own massive-scale intertwined world. Running from 2005 to 2013, Andy grew a small cult following, and was able to be featured as extras on DVDs and air on television.”

Asteroid Andy was special, because it was the unofficial “sister series” for hoops&yoyo. Several times in hoops&yoyo’s blog would Asteroid Andy be mentioned, Andy appears several times in hoops&yoyo’s Haunted Halloween, and Andy was even featured on a physical greeting card for hoops&yoyo. This was all due in part to Pedro Martin working on both projects at the same time. While hoops&yoyo comprised some of his main work, he also created Andy on the side as a passion project, and got the help from Hallmark to officially publish it onto the site.

Very similarly to hoops&yoyo, a large amount of the content on AsteroidAndy.com was not properly archived. This included almost every single game, over half of the animations, and several other bits of interactive content. While interest in archiving Asteroid Andy was more niche among the members of piddles.net, there was a large enough of a demand for an archive similar to piddles.net to warrant the creation of AsteroidAndy.com, first teased in late 2025.

Around the same time, 1234Studios helped us to hunt down a copy of Asteroid Andy’s Party Planet Game which was a CD-ROM of the first ever iteration of Asteroid Andy. It took several days, and watching a listing all day, but Cyan managed to buy the CD before it could be sold to someone else. This was the first big find in many, many months regarding Hallmark Flash content, and also was a huge and important part of not only Asteroid Andy’s history, but Hallmark as well. It was the first time in a long time that piddles.net had finally found a highly sought after item.

On January 9th, 2026, AsteroidAndy.com was launched to the public, showcasing the small batch of animations and games saved, a history of the franchise, and a gallery of photos.

Only about 2 weeks later, Pedro Martin helped us to archive almost 90% of all of the missing content, including tons of the games and animations. This came after we had showcased the website to him, and as luck would have it, around the same time he had found a presentation folder, which happened to have the aforementioned files. Two victories in a row! This was a massive push forward for the community, and the faith in the lost media hunt for more of Hallmark’s lost material.

February 2026. The Discord server formerly known as “the hoops&yoyo archive” becomes “piddles.net” and the focus is broaden to all Hallmark eCards to reflect the connection between piddles.net and AsteroidAndy.com. With spirits high, the server reformed, and the community now more faithful in finding more content, the search was back on. The only problem: the wall was still the same.

Despite everything, there was very little left to scrape for new content, and while the community was now more hopeful and actively searching again, there were not any major leads or finds like the beginning of 2026.

Until . . .

Mother’s Day, 2026. A member of the piddles.net Discord, simply named “Piddles,” posts a file, “hyz1014 What Mom Hears.swf” instructing users to open it with Flash Player. For a couple hours, this message stood unnoticed, until DanielSWF pointed out that this was a Flash file we had never seen before. All eyes turned to her as she asked if we would like for her to send the files she has in her personal archive of the website. She had saved almost the majority of the website before it went offline, while it was still online.

Tons of eCards we had never seen before in Flash, ones undocumented, ones new to everyone, ones that old time fans remembered, it was a blast going through them all and seeing these cards in high quality for the first time. Members recounted how a lot of these eCards had previously only been recorded, or screenshotted, and the surrealism of having that file once and for all. Near the end of her first day uploading the archive, “Piddles” uploaded something very special, a file entitled “listenuptroops – listen up, troops!.swf”:

I heard several people screaming at the top of their lungs in the server voice call that happened immediately after, people rejoicing, cheering, just all so happy that the search for this one eCard was finally over, that with it came so much more than we could’ve ever hoped to get, so much new material, not just limited to eCards or Flash content, but wallpapers, screensavers, new print material never seen before!

In a lot of ways, the mythos of “Listen Up, Troops!” being the key to finding everything was partly true: it was found in the most comprehensive archive of hoops&yoyo content. But in reality, it was not one eCard that helped us find this new material, it was someone who cared for the media that they loved, and saved it, making sure that others could have access to it in the future. It is a true testament to the foresight and passion “Piddles” had to archive this material, and we are forever grateful to her for helping us by sharing her archive.

As of writing this blog post, the files from her archive are still being uploaded to the piddles.net discord, and within the coming days, we will be able to release this archive for download. As well, over the summer, the website will be updated by Cyan to accommodate the newly found material. In a lot of ways, it feels like a renaissance for the community. Interest for a lot of people has come back, and motivation to update this website with new material has been sparked.

The importance of “Listen Up, Troops!” in the hoops&yoyo community was not the contents of the eCard, but the idea and symbol that it became for everyone, that this was an effort worth fighting for, that there is hope to find everything. Without its importance, a lot of people would have never been interested in the hunt in the first place. I hope this stays a reminder for the community that there is hope in everything being found one day, but that it will take people who had the foresight to save these files in the first place, be that a database like Wayback, or a person like “Piddles”. I hope it is a reminder to everyone to archive the media you love. One day, you might be the only person with it.

During 2013 to 2015, Hallmark.com slowly began to phase out Flash-based content on their website, primarily the eCards that ran on it. hoops&yoyo heavily relied on the software, as it is what allowed it to be interactive.
